Audiology, derived from the Latin words audīre and -logia meaning to hear, is a study that focusses on hearing, balance, and other related conditions. Audiologists are the specialists who treat patients suffering from hearing loss and prevent further damage with the help of various diagnostic strategies. During the tests, which include behavioural hearing, electrophysiologic, and emission measurements, an audiologist will be able to assess and determine the hearing loss and the severity of the impairment.
These tests also help in understanding if the hearing loss is found in the outer ear, middle ear or inner ear, auditory nerve, or central nervous system. If the tests confirm the loss of hearing or any vestibular abnormality, the conditions are treated with hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other appropriate medical or surgical interventions.
